EMBARK ON AN ADVENTURE CENTURIES IN THE MAKING
In the eighteenth century it was impossible to travel through Western North Carolina without encountering the Cherokee… for the well traveled, it still is.
The Cherokee have called Western North Carolina home for over 11,000 years. For centuries we have made our mark on the region, preserving our rich history and culture to share with the world.
Located in the heart of the Qualla Boundary, more commonly known as the Cherokee Indian Reservation, the Cherokee Cultural District allows visitors to become immersed in the triumphant story of the Cherokee People. Home to the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual, Unto These Hills Outdoor Drama, the Oconaluftee Indian Village and Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds, the Cultural District has something for everyone.
Take a trip through time at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian featuring centuries old artifacts, collections of written and oral histories, and interactive displays that explore Cherokee history and culture. An integral component of our story is traditional arts and crafts. Master Cherokee artists have honed their skills over time using centuries old techniques. Their works of art are on display and available for purchase at Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual.
See the history and culture come to life at the Oconaluftee Indian Village and Unto These Hills Outdoor Drama. The ever changing Oconaluftee Indian Village is a living history site that focuses on 18th Century Cherokee life. Stroll through this recreated 1750s Cherokee Village to see what life was like in a world full of rapid change. From the Introduction of the White settlers, the tragic Trail of Tears to the present day, Unto These Hills Outdoor Drama allows visitors to become part of the Cherokee story. Told from a truly Cherokee perspective, the show immerses visitors in the sometimes tragic but always triumphant story of our people.
Welcome to Cherokee…our home.
